Tax Manager (Generalist) – Public Accounting Overview
We are recruiting experienced Tax Managers to join public accounting firms across the United States. These are generalist roles offering exposure to a diverse client base, including privately held businesses, partnerships, corporations, and high-net-worth individuals.

Role Responsibilities Client Management
- Manage a portfolio of tax clients across individual and business sectors
- Act as the primary point of contact, ensuring strong client relationships and high-quality service delivery
- Coordinate effectively with clients and internal teams to meet deadlines and expectations
Tax Compliance & Review
- Review and prepare complex federal, state, and local tax returns, including:
- High-net-worth individuals
- Partnerships and LLCs
- S-Corporations and C-Corporations
- Ensure accuracy and compliance across all filings and supporting documentation
- Oversee preparation and review of workpapers completed by junior staff
Tax Advisory & Planning
- Identify tax planning opportunities for both individual and business clients
- Provide guidance on general tax structuring and compliance matters
- Conduct tax research and prepare technical analysis where required
- Support clients with a range of tax-related issues and planning needs
Leadership & Supervision
- Supervise, mentor, and review work performed by Tax Seniors and Associates
- Manage engagement budgets, timelines, and workflow allocation
- Provide coaching and development support to team members
Practice Support
- Contribute to overall engagement profitability and realization targets
- Stay current on changes in federal and state tax legislation
- Support firm initiatives, including process improvement and client service enhancement
Tax Authority Interaction
- Assist clients with IRS and state tax notices, audits, and correspondence
- Support resolution of tax issues with relevant authorities
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field
- CPA license required or actively pursuing
- 5–8+ years of experience in public accounting tax
- Experience reviewing tax returns for individuals and business entities
- Strong understanding of U.S. federal and multi-state taxation
Skills & Attributes
- Strong technical tax knowledge and analytical ability
- Excellent communication and client relationship skills
- Ability to manage multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Proficiency with tax software (e.g., CCH Axcess, GoSystem, ProSystem fx)
- Experience with tax research tools (Checkpoint, Bloomberg Tax, etc.)
